When a SASSA recipient dies and the death is registered with the Department of Home Affairs,  SASSA will automatically be notified and will cancel the social grant immediately. The Department of Home Affairs Population Register is linked with the SASSA database. If you need to communicate with SASSA, their toll-free number is 0800 60 10 11.

Social grant payments after death are not transferrable

Families of beneficiaries who died before the beginning of the following month should withdraw the grant paid in the account of the deceased beneficiary at the beginning of the month as by doing so they are committing a serious criminal offence. The Social Assistance Act demands that SASSA recover the social grant payment withdrawn on behalf of the deceased. If the grant is not stopped after one month, a nominated family member can visit any SASSA local office to cancel it.
